All you need to know - Ooredoo Doha Marathon
As excitement builds for the upcoming Ooredoo Doha Marathon, we've decided to share everything you need to know about this heart-pumping race over which people have trained for months.
Ooredoo briefly discussed the 2022 Marathon at a recently held press conference, which confirmed modifications to the route in Lusail City, adding more innovations to the already popular marathon event. Therefore, expect to witness a greater number of participants and amazing prizes on Friday, March 11, 2022.
The newly introduced ‘Aladaam’ category is expected to increase Qatari participation during the long run of the marathon event and sports in general.
The running event offers a variety of categories that ensures runners of different ages and skill levels can participate. Participants can also expect to be running alongside international running superstars as well as local running enthusiasts!
The age categorisation for the 42 km, 21 km, and 10 km races are as follows: Men (<= 44), Men Master (44+), Women (<= 44), and Women Master (44+).
The age categorisation for the 5 km race is as follows: Junior Men (13-17), Junior Women (13-17), Men (18+), and Women (18+).
The timing for all the categories are as follows: 42 km & 21 km race starts at 6.30 a.m., 10 km at 7.15 a.m., and 5 km at 8 a.m.
Those wanting to participate in this event must have a valid vaccination certificate to register.
The funds raised by the Ooredoo Doha Marathon will always go to charitable causes. This year’s recipient is Qatar Foundation’s Ability Friendly Program.
As for the previous Ooredoo Doha Marathon, it was a virtual running event held in Lusail City on Friday, February 19, 2021, and was considered a resounding success.
The event attracted more than 5,900 runners from 108 countries across the globe - the largest turnout for a Middle East virtual running event.
Individual runners could participate in the event, with their run times logged on the leaderboard using the Suffix. Tracker app.
The 2021 edition also included a variety of categories that ensured runners of all ages and abilities could take part, from a 1km run to a half-marathon and the full 42km marathon for both men and women.
As prizes, winners and runners up in each main category were awarded a wide range of smart devices. Additionally, the first 3500 runners in Qatar received a free t-shirt and medal.
The men's full marathon witnessed Elarbi Khattabi take the win with a time of 2:32:20; Nasreddine Mansour and Cameron Nail were second and third, respectively.
The women's main event was won by Andrea Stadler in 3:23:33, while Ghalya Alharami and Angelita Maano took second and third place, respectively.
As for the upcoming marathon, expect thousands of people to line the streets, creating an exciting atmosphere you will not want to miss! Spectators are just as eager to attend as participants. Despite this, COVID-19 restrictions will be enforced, participants and spectators will be strictly limited, and all current health and safety guidelines will be complied with by the organizers.
Registrations are still open for the Marathon in Lusail City, including the virtual run.
